[Karen: the scene. Arriving at the Lodge, the road in, the first thing seen, and the date of the stay. Nothing here is written until the stay has happened.]
Primland sits on 12,000 private acres in Meadows of Dan, Va., in Patrick County, at the edge of the Dan River Gorge. It was a family hunting estate before it became a resort. The Lodge opened in 2009, and Auberge Resorts Collection took it over in 2021. This summer Travel + Leisure readers voted it No. 14 among resorts in the continental United States and No. 1 in the South. It also holds two Michelin Keys, the hotel rating Michelin introduced in 2024.
Can a lawyer work there?
The rooms have desks, and the Lodge advertises free Wi-Fi. [Karen: whether it worked for email and a video call in my room, the speed test result and which room.] Reports from guests on Tripadvisor and in travel reviews point to the Great Hall and its porch as the place people gather, and the main floor as the busiest part of the Lodge before dinner. [Karen: where I worked, whether anyone interrupted me, and whether I would ask for a particular room for a long call.]
Cell service is the question to settle before booking. [Karen: carrier, bars at the Lodge, at the treehouses and on the course.] The Lodge's number is 276-222-6837.
Can it host a retreat or meeting?
The property has 54 rooms, including cottages and houses, and the resort has said it holds about 100 guests at a time. A 20-lawyer firm would be a large group at Primland, not a booking among many. The resort offers dedicated meeting space. The online booking was not working when I checked, and the resort asks to handle group requests by phone. [Karen: the meeting room name and capacity, buyout terms and what the sales office quoted.]
[Karen: whether I toured the meeting space, and where a group would eat, work and break out.]
What there is to do
The activity list is long enough for three days. The Highland Course, a Donald Steel design from 2006, plays 7,051 yards from the back tees. Golf Digest ranks it the No. 1 public course in Virginia and includes it among America's 100 Greatest Public Courses. A round costs $275 in November and $325 in peak season.
Beyond golf, the resort offers sporting clays, fly fishing for trout in the estate's streams, horseback riding, off-road driving, hikes to Buzzard's Roost and along the old Appalachian Trail, moonshine at the Tobacco Barn, and the Sage spa, which has an indoor pool. The observatory atop the silo holds what the resort calls the largest telescope on the East Coast. Stargazing sessions are included for guests. A full moon limits what the telescope can show, so the calendar matters when choosing dates. [Karen: what I did, and the one thing worth the trip.]
The five tree houses are built on stilts over the gorge, and the two newest have private hot tubs. [Karen: whether I stayed in one.]
Is the food good?
Leatherflower, in the Lodge, is the main dining room. Its menu is seasonal, built on produce from surrounding farms. Guests on Tripadvisor repeatedly name the lamb chops and the ravioli appetizer. [Karen: dinner for two, with wine, the cost and what I ordered.] Stables Saloon serves family-style meals on weekends in a converted barn, and the 19th Pub is the casual option. Guests say two things about the food: it is good, and it is expensive, because the nearest alternative is a long drive down the mountain. [Karen: whether I agree, and breakfast.]
Getting there and what it costs
Primland is about five hours by car from Washington, down Interstate 81 and over the Blue Ridge Parkway, and two hours from Charlotte. The closest airport is Piedmont Triad in Greensboro, about 90 minutes away. The last stretch of the access road is gravel in places. [Karen: confirm the drive time and the shuttle to the barn.]
Published room rates start around $550 a night in the off season. Guests on Tripadvisor reported rates near $1,000 in October, and the listing shows an average range of $905 to $2,782 for a standard room. One guest put the resort fee at $150 a night in June. [Karen: what I paid and for which dates.]
The resort is building a new activities center. Guests this year arrived to find the construction under way. A caller should ask whether it is finished. [Karen: status on my dates.]
[Disclosure, required by our rules: say here whether the stay was paid or hosted, and by whom.]
