The Tailor Matters More Than the Price Tag

A well-tailored inexpensive suit can beat a badly fitted expensive one. The fix often costs $100 to $200. Here is what to ask for, and who to call.

Jake Mueser makes bespoke suits in New York. He told Gear Patrol that fit matters more than fabric or price. A beautifully made suit can look bad when it does not fit. An inexpensive suit can look excellent when it is tailored well.

What a tailor does

Ready-to-wear jackets are often cut large, so the sleeves usually need to come in until a quarter to half an inch of cuff shows. Mueser says to take the jacket in at the side seams, not only at the center back. The trousers get hemmed for the shoes you will wear.

Buy the jacket for the shoulders, because shoulder work is the costliest alteration. Use a shop built around alterations, he says, not a dry cleaner that added a tailor.

What it costs

Alan David Custom, a custom tailor, published its prices in April 2026. A trouser hem runs $20 to $50. Taking in a waist runs $75 to $150. A full suit with two or three common changes runs $100 to $200. Shoulder work starts at $150.

Mueser says major reconstruction can cost $200 or more, and that for a budget suit, spending more on alterations than the suit cost may not make sense. The prices above come from a company that sells custom suits. Ask a local tailor for a quote.

Makers to call

Manocha Bespoke is in New York. Rishabh Manocha offers bespoke, semi-bespoke and made-to-measure. Resident magazine described the process in October 2026: a consultation, measurements that account for posture, and a test garment before the final suit. The article gives no prices, and it presents the house’s own account.

Three London makers are also worth knowing. Anglo-Italian was founded in 2017 by Jake Grantham and makes custom pieces in London and Tuscany. Speciale, in Notting Hill, is run by George Marsh, who trained under a Florentine tailor and makes each suit himself, in a limited number a year. Natalino, founded by former Merrill Lynch employee Nathan Lee, makes Neapolitan-style suits. FASHION put its price at around $1,000 in April 2025.

I have not confirmed whether the London makers travel or ship to the United States. Ask each one before you plan a trip. Ask what they can alter and who does the finishing.
